This week in my current work-in-progress...
So, last week I mentioned Fin was about to find some trouble... He definitely did. Here's a snippet from our adventures this week. Trouble finds him, always. That's why he's so fun to write. :) Also, I love writing male POVs, and in this story, I ONLY write his POV. It's been really fun!
Here's a look....
The world came back to me in fragmentsâthe taste of copper and stale ale, the throb in my skull that pulsed in time with my heartbeat, and the cold bite of metal against my wrists. I kept my breathing steady and my eyes closed, cataloging my surroundings through senses that felt . . . wrong. Muted.
Stone walls. The scent of unwashed bodies and despair. The distant echo of dripping water. And underneath it all, the sluggish, dampened feeling where my abilities should have been sharp and clear. Whatever toxin theyâd shot me with in the tavern was still working its way through my system, leaving my powers accessible but unreliable. It was like trying to navigate through thick fog.
I tested my animal telepathy, reaching out for any creature nearby. The mental touch felt clumsy, unfocused. A rat somewhere in the walls responded with confused chittering before the connection fizzled out entirely.
Haze. Iâd heard of the poison Eduart used on his collection of toys, but Iâd never experienced it myself. The toxin dulled the mind without completely diluting abilities. It was all that kept Pyra sane during captivity. And by sane, sheâd meant detached enough to survive her misery in muddled consciousness, while her calming ability was being used as a drug without even wielding it. How did a toxin like that benefit Eduart, though? And more urgently, why had they used Haze on me?
I cracked one eye open, then the other. Slick stone walls. Iron bars that stretched from floor to ceiling. I was in a cell as expected. My wrists were shackled to the wall behind me, the chains just long enough to let me sit upright.

I found this "sign" (or whatever we want to call it) in the garage. The hubs was practicing his lettering and I guess he chose to practice with this. I thought it was cute. Now, it's just chilling with the camping stuff. đ đ

You know Knox and Ava from book one (and little Harper), but it's time to meet the rest of the Land of Ash crew who will steal your hearts (some of them for a second time đ).
Fun fact: Land of Ash is ONLY one point of view. That rarely happens in my books. In fact, the only other novels Iâve written with a single POV is Untamed from the Savage North Chronicles and Tide and Tempest from Forgotten Lands. So, this is something that doesnât happen often, but Harper girl carried this story all on her own.

 This week in my current work-in-progress...
I got to have some real fun with Fin. He's had a rough start to this book due to how things were left in The Raven Queen, and with Del on her own (temporary) journey, he's left to his own devices. And for Fin, that means finding a bit of trouble, of course. Here's a snippet from this chapter before "shit-ith hit-ith the fan-ith." I don't know why, but him getting into trouble is so much fun to write. Ha!
Opening the tavern door, I tugged my hood over my head to hide my hair before I stepped inside. Iâd never thought much about my copper curls growing up. Now they were a nuisance that made me a walking target wherever I went.
The Silver Bow Inn was just as I remembered the last time I was here with Callon and Lyraâit was a dimly lit, crowded tavern tepid with body heat that smelled of sweat and stale beer. Only this time the sickly sweet tinge of a strix-laced cigarette smoke lingered in the air, and immediately, I sought the one face I was on a mission to find.Â
As I made my way through the tavern, I counted nearly a dozen Sierra guards in their green armor mingling with merchants weary from a long day around the card tables and bar tops. Their boisterous laughter was loud and strangely comforting, and for a moment, I could almost imagine I was just a random lout on his way home from a long day, stopping in to blow off some steam.
Instead, I kept a low profile and made my way around the room, headed for an empty table in the corner. For six days Iâd been stuck with Callon and Kalliopeâs bickering, and I finally got a temporary reprieve.Â
âSomething I can get for you, love?â the barkeep asked. Her round cheeks were flush, her hair frayed from its braided crown around her head, and the stale beer wafting off her stained apron was nearly enough to turn my stomach.
I nodded and slid a coin onto the table. âAn ale. Please.â
The barkeep set a mug down on the table with a clatter, louder than was necessary, and it was all I could do not to glance around, ensuring unwanted eyes hadnât already found me. As she filled the mug to the brim, however, I went relatively unnoticed and rested my elbows on the table, taking a big gulp.
âKeep âem coming,â I told her, a little breathless, but my attention was fixed on the table in the center of the room and the portly, blue-eyed drunk; he sucked on a strix-laced cigarette.
